Master Lu's Teachings

The Master and the Disciple

- An old proverb says: "Where's a master, there are disciples, too". I still have an example that contradicts this saying. It's about a brilliant doctor who invented a personal method in surgery (I won't go into details) but never had any disciples. Moreover, being completely engrossed in his work, and quite forgetful of dropping at home from time to time, he was abandoned by his wife! He lived in a small way since he never took advantage of his invention.

Master Lu's Reply:

- The proverb says that a master always has disciples. And so it is. Though, one should not expect to find the disciples either around their master or where he is [i.e. in his trade] at any time. A master is a model for all the things and beings in the universe [i.e. for anyone], as the Scriptures state. What have you learned from your doctor, for instance?

- That you gain nothing if you're really good at something, and totally committed to your profession. Nobody gives a damn about you!

- Here we have a master teaching without words, and a disciple believing there are no disciples, concluded Master Lu. Jhian Yang
